| The Doushuai Temple |
NANJING, June 8, 2002 — A visit
today to this extraordinary Buddhist temple is among my most rewarding experiences
here to date. The temple offers a simple, meditative life where visitors are
welcome and are free to question Yuan Lin, the humble and wise principal monk.

| Here we see the 88-year-old Yuan Lin standing before the temple,
located on a mountainside 20 miles northwest of Nanjing. People come
from miles around to share his wisdom and kindness and to worship Buddha. |

| Guanyin (above, and following pages) is a famous female Buddha in China, dating to a thousand
years ago. The significance of this temple as an island of Buddhist belief
can only be appreciated against the colorful, confused tapestry of Chinese
belief and unbelief. |
